Understanding HSN codes in GST
What is an HSN code?
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is an internationally standardized product classification system. India adopted HSN under GST to classify goods uniformly across states. Each code maps to a specific product description and GST rate slab.
HSN vs SAC
HSN codes classify goods (Chapters 01–98). SAC codes (Services Accounting Code) classify services under Chapter 99. Both must appear on GST invoices and determine the applicable tax rate.
HSN code structure (2/4/6/8 digits)
- 2 digits — Chapter (e.g. 10 = Cereals)
- 4 digits — Heading (e.g. 1006 = Rice)
- 6 digits — Sub-heading (international HS level)
- 8 digits — Tariff item (India-specific HSN extension)
How many digits on a GST invoice?
Turnover thresholds determine how many HSN digits you must show:
- Up to ₹5 crore turnover — 4-digit HSN (optional for B2C)
- ₹5 crore to ₹20 crore — 4-digit HSN mandatory
- Above ₹20 crore — 6-digit HSN mandatory
- Imports/exports — 8-digit HSN recommended

FAQ
Common questions
What is an HSN code?
HSN stands for Harmonized System of Nomenclature — an internationally standardized system for classifying goods. In India, HSN codes are used under GST to identify products on invoices and determine applicable tax rates. Codes can be 2, 4, 6, or 8 digits depending on turnover and reporting requirements.
What is the full form of HSN code?
HSN code full form is Harmonized System of Nomenclature. It is based on the international HS (Harmonized System) code maintained by the World Customs Organization, extended by India to 8 digits for finer product classification under GST.
What is HSN code in GST?
Under India's Goods and Services Tax (GST), every taxable supply of goods must carry an HSN code on the invoice. The code determines which GST rate slab applies — 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28% (plus compensation cess on certain items). Services use SAC codes instead.
How do I find my HSN code?
Search by your product name (e.g. 'rice', 'mobile phone') or enter a known code prefix. Browse by chapter if you know the product category. For services, switch to the SAC tab and search by service type.
What is the difference between HSN and SAC?
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) classifies goods — Chapters 01 to 98. SAC (Services Accounting Code) classifies services under Chapter 99. Both appear on GST invoices and determine the applicable GST rate.
