How import costs work in Australia

For consignments over A$1,000, duty and GST are assessed at the border. For low-value goods (A$1,000 or under), GST is generally collected by the overseas seller or platform at the point of sale rather than at customs.

Example: A$10,000 of goods with 5% duty = A$500 duty. GST at 10% on (A$10,000 + A$500 + freight) ≈ A$1,170, plus clearance — about A$11,670 landed before other fees, roughly 16.7% on top of goods value.

Importing a car into Australia: duty, GST and Luxury Car Tax

Vehicles follow the same landed-cost logic as other goods, with two extras. Most passenger vehicles attract 5% customs duty, though cars originating in FTA partner countries — Japan, the US, Korea, China, the UK and others — can enter at 0% with valid origin documentation. GST at 10% is then charged on the value of the taxable importation: the customs value plus duty plus international transport and insurance. To model a car import above, enter the vehicle price as the goods value, set duty to 5% (or 0% for FTA origins) and add your shipping quote.

On top of that, Luxury Car Tax applies at 33% to the portion of the GST-inclusive value above the LCT threshold — indexed each year at roughly A$80,000 for most vehicles, with a higher threshold (about A$91,000) for fuel-efficient ones. Add any LCT as a fixed fee in the calculator. Note that a vehicle also needs an import approval under the Road Vehicle Standards rules before it ships — approval, compliance and asbestos-inspection costs are part of your true landed cost, so include them in the fees field.

Your duty rate hinges on your product's tariff code. Look it up with our Harmonized Tariff Schedule search — the international 6-digit HS root sits at the start of every country's tariff number — then paste the rate into the calculator above.

A supplier's quote rarely tells the full story. Ocean or air freight, marine insurance, import duty, VAT or GST, and customs brokerage can add 15–40% to your product cost. EximKit's Landed Cost Calculator models every layer — including your Incoterm and de-minimis rules — so you know the real per-unit number before you wire a deposit.

FAQ

Australia import questions

How is GST calculated on Australian imports?

GST is 10%, charged on the value of the taxable importation — the customs value plus duty, freight and insurance. The calculator pre-fills 10% and applies it after duty and fees.

What is Australia's low-value import threshold?

Consignments valued at A$1,000 or less generally have GST collected by the seller or marketplace at checkout. Above A$1,000, duty and GST are assessed at the border.

Do I pay duty on all Australian imports?

Many goods carry a 5% general duty rate, but rates vary by tariff classification and free trade agreements (e.g. with China, Japan, the US) can reduce duty to 0% with valid origin documentation.

How much is import tax on a car in Australia?

Typically 5% customs duty (0% for many FTA-origin vehicles), then 10% GST on the customs value plus duty, transport and insurance. Luxury Car Tax adds 33% on the portion of the GST-inclusive value above the annual LCT threshold. Import approval and compliance costs apply on top.
