How import costs work in United States
Duty-free treatment for low-value shipments under $800 (Section 321 de-minimis) has been suspended for many origins in 2025, so more shipments now attract duty. Section 301 tariffs on Chinese-origin goods can add substantially to the base HTS rate — confirm your product's exact rate before you order.
Example: 500 units at $25 (goods $12,500) + $1,200 freight + $85 insurance = $13,785 CIF. At a 3.4% duty rate that's about $469 duty, plus ~$225 brokerage/handling — roughly $14,479 landed, or $28.96 per unit before state sales tax.
Your duty rate hinges on your product's tariff code. Look it up with our Harmonized Tariff Schedule search — the international 6-digit HS root sits at the start of every country's tariff number — then paste the rate into the calculator above.

A supplier's quote rarely tells the full story. Ocean or air freight, marine insurance, import duty, VAT or GST, and customs brokerage can add 15–40% to your product cost. EximKit's Landed Cost Calculator models every layer — including your Incoterm and de-minimis rules — so you know the real per-unit number before you wire a deposit.

FAQ
United States import questions
Is there import VAT in the United States?
No. The US has no federal import VAT. You pay customs duty (based on your HTS code) plus small federal fees at the border; state sales tax applies when you later sell the goods domestically.
What is the US de-minimis threshold in 2026?
The $800 Section 321 de-minimis has been suspended for many origins as of 2025, so low-value shipments that previously cleared duty-free may now attract duty. Verify the current rule for your specific origin country.
Do Section 301 tariffs apply to my import?
If your goods are of Chinese origin, additional Section 301 tariffs may apply on top of the standard HTS duty rate. Look up your exact combined rate with the HTS Code Lookup tool and enter it in the duty field.
