Import duty & taxes in Canada
How the calculator estimates duty and tax for Canada. Rates are the standard defaults — always editable and best confirmed against the official schedule for your exact goods.
- GST is 5% federally; provincial sales tax (PST/HST) may also apply depending on the province.
- Customs duty depends on the tariff classification; many goods qualify for duty-free treatment under CUSMA with a valid origin declaration.
- De-minimis (courier, from US/Mexico under CUSMA): duty-free up to C$150 and tax-free up to C$40; the general de-minimis is C$20.
- Brokerage/disbursement fees from couriers can be significant on low-value shipments — include them above.
Estimates for guidance only — not legal or customs advice. Confirm duty rates and thresholds with the official tariff schedule or a licensed customs broker before you file.

A supplier's quote rarely tells the full story. Ocean or air freight, marine insurance, import duty, VAT or GST, and customs brokerage can add 15–40% to your product cost. EximKit's Landed Cost Calculator models every layer — including your Incoterm and de-minimis rules — so you know the real per-unit number before you wire a deposit.

FAQ
Landed cost questions
How much is import tax in Canada?
Federal GST is 5%, and provincial tax may apply on top depending on the destination province. Customs duty depends on the tariff classification, and many goods are duty-free under CUSMA with proper origin documentation.
What is the Canadian de-minimis threshold?
For courier shipments from the US or Mexico under CUSMA, goods are duty-free up to C$150 and tax-free up to C$40. The general de-minimis for other shipments is C$20.
What is a de-minimis threshold?
It's the shipment value below which a country waives duty (and sometimes tax). The calculator flags whether your shipment is above or below it.
Do Incoterms change my landed cost?
Yes. Your Incoterm decides which costs are already in the supplier price. Pick CIF and freight/insurance are included; pick DDP and duty/tax are paid by the seller.
