Import duty & taxes in India

How the calculator estimates duty and tax for India. Rates are the standard defaults — always editable and best confirmed against the official schedule for your exact goods.

  • Basic Customs Duty (BCD) varies by commodity (commonly 0–20%+) and is charged on the assessable (CIF) value.
  • Social Welfare Surcharge of 10% is levied on the BCD amount.
  • IGST (commonly 18%, but 5–28% by product) applies on the value including BCD and surcharge.
  • Compensation cess may apply to specific goods such as vehicles and tobacco.

Estimates for guidance only — not legal or customs advice. Confirm duty rates and thresholds with the official tariff schedule or a licensed customs broker before you file.

A supplier's quote rarely tells the full story. Ocean or air freight, marine insurance, import duty, VAT or GST, and customs brokerage can add 15–40% to your product cost. EximKit's Landed Cost Calculator models every layer — including your Incoterm and de-minimis rules — so you know the real per-unit number before you wire a deposit.

FAQ

Landed cost questions

How is import duty calculated in India?

Duty stacks on the assessable (CIF) value: Basic Customs Duty first, then a 10% Social Welfare Surcharge on the BCD, then IGST on the total including duty. Some goods also attract a compensation cess.

What is the IGST rate on imports to India?

IGST on imports mirrors the domestic GST rate for the product — most commonly 18%, but ranging from 5% to 28% depending on the goods. It is charged on the value including BCD and surcharge.

What is a de-minimis threshold?

It's the shipment value below which a country waives duty (and sometimes tax). The calculator flags whether your shipment is above or below it.

Do Incoterms change my landed cost?

Yes. Your Incoterm decides which costs are already in the supplier price. Pick CIF and freight/insurance are included; pick DDP and duty/tax are paid by the seller.
