How import costs work in India
India has effectively no general de-minimis for commercial imports, though gifts up to ₹5,000 may be relieved. Basic Customs Duty typically starts around 10% and varies widely by HSN code; IGST is usually 18% but can be 5%, 12% or 28% depending on the product.
Example: ₹10,00,000 of goods with 10% BCD = ₹1,00,000 duty. IGST at 18% on (₹10,00,000 + ₹1,00,000) ≈ ₹1,98,000, plus clearance — about ₹12,98,000 landed before freight, roughly 29.8% on top of goods value.
Your duty rate hinges on your product's tariff code. Look it up with our Harmonized Tariff Schedule search — the international 6-digit HS root sits at the start of every country's tariff number — then paste the rate into the calculator above.

A supplier's quote rarely tells the full story. Ocean or air freight, marine insurance, import duty, VAT or GST, and customs brokerage can add 15–40% to your product cost. EximKit's Landed Cost Calculator models every layer — including your Incoterm and de-minimis rules — so you know the real per-unit number before you wire a deposit.

FAQ
India import questions
What is IGST on imports into India?
Integrated GST is charged on the assessable value plus Basic Customs Duty. It is most commonly 18%, but ranges from 5% to 28% by HSN classification. The calculator pre-fills 18% and you can adjust it.
Does India have an import de-minimis?
There is effectively no general de-minimis for commercial imports into India — duty and IGST apply from the first rupee. Personal gifts up to ₹5,000 may be exempt.
What other charges apply beyond BCD and IGST?
A Social Welfare Surcharge and, for some goods, compensation cess or anti-dumping duty can apply. Add these under the fees fields for a more precise landed cost.
